Ventana Resort Travel Guide: Visiting the Resort in Big Sur, California
We planned a relaxing getaway to Ventana Resort while working in San Jose. Kelsey wanted to see Big Sur, California and since we like staying at Hyatt Hotels we decided to see what was around.
We came across Ventana and honestly, the pictures don't do it justice. Ventana Resort in Big Sur is almost more of a retreat than a resort and offered one of the most romantic vacations we have ever been on.

Where To Stay
Guest Rooms
The Ventana guest room is the basic room offered at Ventana Resort but "basic" is not the right word to use. Compared to most hotels this room would be considered a suite.
Each room has it's own deck with outside seated making being surrounded by nature even more enjoyable. If being outside isn't for you there is a window nook for seating so you can still enjoy the views in the comfort of your room.
Of course, the coolest part is the amazing bathtub which has doors opening into the room for a perfect romantic set up. If you want a guest room but with even more flare try one of the upgraded guest-rooms. Some offer fireplaces and other interior perks.
Suites
We stayed in the Pacific House Suite and it was AMAZING! It was one of those rooms where you walk in and think "shut up", at least that's what Kelsey did. You get a larger, more spacious tub with optional doors but if you'd rather be outside, simply go onto your deck to your private Jacuzzi.
The high ceilings with side skylight windows help to give even more natural light to the already giant windows by the patio. We loved the couch by the windows giving us a perfect napping spot.
There are other suites as well each offering something unique. One has your own hammock and outdoor shower.
We may be biased but we do think the Pacific House Suite is one of the best. The first night we made a fire in the fireplace and drifted off to sleep in our giant bed while stargazing out our window. Kelsey even saw a shooting star. It really was a magical place.
Glamping
The other cool lodging option offered at Ventana is "glamping". It's "luxury camping". We didn't go glamping but we did take the hike to the sites and it was pretty cool.
You get to be surrounded by giant trees and the sounds of nature without sleeping on the ground. Also, the bathhouses were nicer than our bathroom at home.
Where to Eat
The Sur House
This is the main restaurant located at Ventana and it offers some of the best views of the Big Sur coast. You can either take the complimentary shuttle or walk along a short scenic trail to get to the restaurant from where the rooms are located.
In the morning we walked the .3 miles enjoying beautiful tress and very camera shy birds to the restaurant. Then we got to enjoy breakfast looking out at rolling hills and the west coast. It was perfect. The indoor seated has a fun lodge feel but honestly the outdoor seated is where it's at.
Room Service
If you are striving for a relaxing getaway then room service is a must. We probably ordered room service almost every day.
The menu for room service is similar to what the Sur House has to offer but there's something about getting it delivered to your room that just seemed to make it better. You can also use room service to order to-go lunches if you have a day adventure planned.
Side Bars
Both the pool and the campsite have a little sidebar offering drinks and some light food options. If you don't want anything too fancy or just need a quick bite to eat these are both great options. If you are looking for some great drinks with a view these are both perfect options.
What to Do
Treat Yo' Self
If you are looking for a luxurious but relaxing getaway, everything you need is here. There is a spa on site that offers massages with a view but even if that's not for you the other amenities are incredible.
Pools
There are two pools on the property. The mountain pool is more secluded with a view from the top of the hill while the meadow pool had some of the best views we've ever seen. Both are heated and very spacious.
Infinity Hot Tub
First off, the infinity hot tub sounds cool enough but then add in the overlook of giant trees and it's perfect. It is large enough to fit up to 20 people but in our visit, we never shared it with more than 2-3 people. It never felt crowded and there is sitting along the entire hot tub.
Sauna
Adding to the romantic theme is a two-person sauna open all day long. There is room for both of you to lay down on a bench and relax while sweating out all those pesky toxins.
Japanese Hot Baths
The hot baths are not only hotter than the other spa options but also offer more seclusion. The water feels and looks pure and there are even stations inside the hot baths to sit, relax and enjoy the solitude.
Meditation
The resort hosts guided meditation most days of the week in the morning to help you relax. It's a great way to enjoy nature, see the resort and help start your day with true relaxation.
Fitness
If you are looking to just relax then feel free to skip this section but Ventana found a way to add fitness into nature making it more enjoyable.
Hiking Trails
There are two hiking trails, one that is a quick 0.3 miles or a longer more scenic trail that is a 1-mile round trip. We cannot stress enough just how beautiful the giant redwood trees are and how great it was to be immersed in them all weekend. There are also other hikes nearby that you can always check out.
Yoga
We did morning yoga with a view and it was perfect. You can hear the waves crashing on the coast which made the whole experience even more zen. You can be a pro or a beginner and still enjoy the hour-long class. They provide all of the equipment and try to make everyone feel welcomed.
Fitness Center
There is a small gym for you to use cardio equipment and weights. It's open 24/7 which means you can get a workout in without taking time away from your other activities.
Hang Around
Hanging around the resort also offers plenty to do. The lobby itself is filled with activities and there are views all over the resort.
Wine and Cheese Hour
Enjoy some free wine and cheese in the main lobby every day. We picked the Brut Rose but every day there is something new to try.
Games
The lobby has pool, chess, and checkers but there are also board games you can use. We took back a small chess board to our room and it was the perfect relaxing night.
Garden
A garden is located on-site and even supplies food for the Sur House. There are also some chickens hanging out and plenty of flowers.
Hammocks
You can literally "hang around" on the hammocks located throughout the property. Just know some rooms have private hammocks so no climbing onto someone's patio.
We hope our travel guide for Ventana Resort in Big Sur will inspire you and help you plan your next trip. This place offers the perfect romantic getaway and plenty of relaxation. Happy Adventuring!
