How to Spend a Quick Day in Mt. Shasta
Spending a quick, but perfect day in Mt. Shasta, California based on our adventures.
We decided to spend Thanksgiving along with some friends in Mt. Shasta, California. It was a good location for all of us and gave the perfect backdrop for the holidays.
If you don't know about the area, Mt Shasta (which was made more famous by the book/movie"Wild") is in Northern California. You can see the snowy top mountain miles away and it is a stunning background.

Where to Stay
Airbnb
Mt. Shasta is a small secluded town next to a great California mountain. To enjoy this area to the fullest it's best to have a view of the mountain. Airbnb is a great way to rent a home in town with a great view.
There is a variety of home sizes available which makes it even better. There are small homes great for a romantic getaway or big houses to rent for big groups.
We went with a group of five plus two dogs and invited even more to hang out. The home we found was cozy and perfect. We went during the winter so we found a place with a fireplace and plenty of blankets.
What to do
Hiking
To summit Mt. Shasta is no easy feat. It's best to have the right gear, be an experienced hiker, and go during the right times. The summit is best accessed during the months of April-September.
There have been deaths so please don't try to take this hike too lightly. If this is something you want to do then find a guide who can make sure you are prepared and can help you throughout.
If you are not trying to get to the top of Mt. Shasta there are other trails you can adventure through. The trails vary in difficulty level which is nice since you can find one to best fit your needs.
McCloud Falls
McCloud river upper/middle/lower falls is a great trail for an easy hike with great views. Even from the parking lot you already have a great view of a waterfall. They even have tables for some great picnic spots.
Bunny Flat Trail
If you are looking for a more strenuous hike then we suggest Bunny Flat Trail. It takes several hours to complete the 4.5 miles and it has a decent elevation gain. You do need a wilderness permit for this one. In the colder months, there is already too much snow to hike without proper shoes so be prepared.
The parking lot for the trailhead is also a great spot to get a view of the mountain. Even if you aren't hiking we suggest to at least visit the trailhead.
We went to the parking lot and then tried sledding down some mini hills with tin containers. Next time we'll bring a sled.
Skiing
In the winter there is plenty of snow for good skiing or snowboarding. There is a ski park which has some great deals and even gives lessons with rentals. Mt. Shasta seems to have snow more than other areas which allow a slightly longer ski season than in the Midwest.
Just be careful because the roads to get to the park can be snowy at times and you may require tire chains. There is a webcam available at the Ski Park website so you can check out surrounding road conditions.
