Columbus Travel Guide for Adventure and Simplicity

Columbus, Ohio

Make the most of your time in Columbus, Ohio with this simple travel guide based on our adventures.

We met in Columbus, Ohio and went to school there but since moving away we have been back to visit many times. Honestly, the list for what to do in Columbus could go on for a while so we will try to keep it to only the best.

Where to Stay

Hotel Leveque

This is one of Marriott's "boutique" hotels but you wouldn't know it has ties to Marriott by just looking at it. The rooms are super chic and there is an actual bar/club set up, not just a hotel lobby bar.

The best part is the location which is right downtown pretty close to the arena district or a longer walk to German village. Hotel in Columbus, Ohio

Where to Eat

Pistacia Vera

Located in German village this place is the perfect french cafe to stop by and get a quick bite for breakfast. Everything is fresh, unique and delicious.

Make sure to grab some macaroons before you go. It does get very busy so try going early. We typically get the muesli with fresh preservatives and an americano on the side.

Northstar Cafe

If you are looking for organic, healthy food then Northstar is our go-to in Columbus. They have a veggie burger, a buddha bowl, and many other options.

They also have a good selection of drinks such as fresh lemonades, juices, and coffees. It's set up where you order at the counter then find yourself a table and they bring out your food.

There are locations throughout Columbus so no matter what part you are visiting you should find one nearby.

Jenis

There's ice cream, and then there's Jenis. Jeni's takes ice cream to a whole new level. All of the flavors are unique but extremely tasty.

Jenis is a big fan favorite in Columbus as that's where it began but it's starting to branch out to more locations. We even had friends get it shipped to Austin for a wedding all because they love it so much.

Kelsey's go-to flavor is Brambleberry crisp which is almost like a cobbler in ice cream form. Phil's favorite is Lemon & Blueberries parfait but unfortunately, it's only a summer option.

DK Diner

If you are looking for the best donuts in town, this is the place. They have a ton of great donut options but our favorite is the blueberry donut. They also have some amazing cinnamon rolls and apple fritters.

DK DinerIf you end up going during the day and want to catch a meal this is a good pick as well. They have a great lunch and dinner menu including the donut burger, which is exactly what it sounds like. Full disclosure we haven't actually eaten the donut burger but we have it on good authority it is great.

The diner itself is a little bit away from downtown Columbus in Upper Arlington but it is a short drive and you won't regret the trip. Just make sure if you want donuts you get there early as they can and usually do sell out.

What to Do

Blue Jackets Games

Even if you are not a true hockey fan you still may enjoy going to a Columbus Blue Jackets game. The atmosphere is unique and there is always something going on.

The best part for Kelsey is when the Zamboni goes onto the rink to re-ice. Typically someone "wins" the chance to ride the Zamboni and its a fun spectacle.

Cosi

We would describe Cosi as a playground, museum for adults and kids with a lot of science and fun hands-on activities. There is a charge for admission but it's more than worth it.

You should always check to see if they have any specials as sometimes admission is less for groups such as homeschoolers, veterans and so on. They have some rotating exhibits so make sure to check the website and know that at times these cost extra.

Columbus Marathon

If you are looking for a fun half or full marathon to complete then the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon needs to be on your list. The whole town comes out to cheer you on and it's such a heartwarming event.

Even if running is not your forte, at least join the spectators. We're not kidding when we say the whole town comes out to support this race. Columbus Marathon

Ohio State Games

The city shuts down for Ohio State football games. 110,000 people showing up to all hang out in one spot for 3+ hours will do that to a city. If you can get a ticket to the game you have to experience the Shoe, as the stadium is nicknamed.

If you can't get a ticket, it's still worth it to head down to campus and tailgate before the game. There are tons of areas to tailgate, right around the stadium is the best for experience and atmosphere.

Just make sure you plan on spending a bunch of time down there because OSU fans take tailgating seriously. You might want to arrive an hour or three early for the game as well to soak in the atmosphere and all that great tailgate food.

If you do get a ticket to the game, make sure you stay for the end of the game where all the players and coaches sing Carmen Ohio. It's worth it but be prepared to wait it out in traffic for a bit afterward. And always make sure you wear either Scarlet or Grey to the games as that is the team colors!
