Winter Getaway in Breckenridge

Breckenridge travel guide

Make the most of your winter getaway in Breckenridge, Colorado with this simple travel guide based on our adventures.

When a physical therapy conference came into Denver we had some friends ask to meet up in Breckenridge for a fun winter getaway. Even though we were 10 hours away in Southern New Mexico, we decided what the heck and hit the road.

Since the drive wasn't an easy feat we planned for a long weekend, bought some waterproof pants, and planned a mini ski vacation. Even with Phil getting a cold, we had a great time.

The fresh snowfall in Colorado made winter activities even more enjoyable. We got to ski and snowboard while watching the winter paradise all around us.

Where to Stay

Village at Breckenridge

If this is your first time in Breckenridge or your first time trying a snow sport then this is the best place for you. The location is perfect for newbies and makes planning a lot easier.

It's located right by Quicksilver chairlift at Peak 9 which is the beginner's lifts. Also located right outside the main entrance is the equipment rental and office for lessons.

Their website refers to their rooms as "condominium suites" which is fitting. The set up is not like other hotel rooms since you get a full kitchen and living room area.

The rooms have amazing windows and views of the ski resort. It snowed while we were there and being able to lay on the couch, drinking coffee watching the snowfall was the perfect addition to our vacation.

The village has one of the cooler hot tub setups we've seen having 4 hot separate hot tubs. We were able to get a hot tub all to ourselves even though several people were there.

They also have an indoor/outdoor pool, steam room, and sauna. Everything you would need to relax after a cold day on the slopes. The Villages at Breckenridge

Airbnb

Renting a house through Airbnb seems to be the more popular option for those visiting Breckenridge. There are lots of options in the area but bear in mind the options go quick!

If you go with renting through Airbnb you have a lot more options on location. You can also rent from condos in the area through Airbnb if you don't need a whole house.

You can easily find some rentals that have a ski-in/ski-out option. That means when you are done on the mountain, you can ski close to where you are staying instead of having to hitch a ride.

When you are looking for your Airbnb in the area, choose one as close to the lift you want to frequent and make sure you have a great mountain view. There is nothing better than waking up to the sight of snow falling on the mountain.

Where to Eat

Breckenridge Brewery and Pub

If you are looking for a place to go watch the game, hang out with friends, and enjoy some good food and drinks, this is the place to do it. We met up with friends after skiing and it was a great way to connect since the ski resort is so big.

They have tons of beer options as you could probably guess from their name. All told they have over 50 beers to choose from, ranging from seasonal beers to mountain-inspired beers and everything in between.

If you like beer, you will find something to drink at this place. Kelsey opted for a Nancy Sherbet, a sour beer that she loved.

Their menu is stacked with appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, salads among other options. There isn't a wrong way to go when it comes to food here.

They also have an extensive list of events they host at their multiple locations including concerts and runs. If you can't make it to one of their events, just meeting your friends after a long day on the slopes is a good enough reason to visit this awesome brewery.

City Market

You might be wondering why a grocery store would make it on our where to eat list. Not only is it important to have snacks but you will probably make a meal or two even if it's just PB&J.

Most Lodging in Breckenridge has some sort of Kitchenette. That makes it easier to stay in, enjoy the warmth of your room, and watch the snowfall outside with a warm meal.

Picking up some groceries will save money on your trip and make sure you have enough fuel for your winter activities. We walked one morning to the market but the website does have a delivery option.

Extreme Pizza

Extreme Pizza in BreckenridgeWe are Pizza aficionados having eaten pizza in several locations including our favorite pizza ever in Reykjavik. While this pizza isn't our top pizza ever (shout out to Devito's Pizza), it is some high-quality pizza!

It can be on the expensive side so we suggest splitting a pizza as we did. It is more of a thin-crust pizza but it has good ingredients and best of all, they deliver which is a hard thing to find in Breckenridge.

To get the full pizza life we suggest you go for the pineapple and jalapenos pizza along with an order of their extremely twisted sticks.

Make sure to look online for coupons as we were able to save ourselves five dollars on our order just by clicking through the website a little bit.

Tenmile Station

There are restaurants located throughout the resort but we would suggest you stay away from these as they are PRICEY. We're talking at least fifteen dollars just for a slice of pizza and a drink.

Tenmile is one ski resort restaurant we will give an honorable mention to. It's located up in the mountains right where the Quicksilver Peak 9 chair lift drops off.

This place is cooler than the rest since it's located in the middle of the ski runs. There may also be a time you aren't ready to head down the mountain and need a bit to eat.

Kelsey ate here during a break in her ski lessons getting the vegetarian loaded baked potato. It was expensive but worth avoiding the lift down and back.

What to Do

Skiing/Snowboarding

Most people are heading to Breckenridge for the slopes. There is a lot of variety and runs to choose from making it a perfect winter destination.

You can ski or snowboard and all ability levels are welcome. When we heard about skiing in Colorado in the past people always made it seem like you had to be close to a pro. This is far from the truth.

There are runs for everyone and plenty of opportunities to learn or improve your skills. Lessons are available for all skill levels or you can just get your equipment and go.

Located throughout town are plenty of rental shops if you don't already own your gear. You will need to buy a lift pass which gives you access to all of the slopes on the resort.

Gondola

If you are looking for something to do that doesn't involve being outdoors in the cold, this is a great option, especially for families. The Gondola leaves from the Center of town and rises 400 feet as you travel to the top of Peak 8.

The whole round trip will take you just over 25 minutes and best of all, it's free! It's a great way to see the outdoors and enjoy the mountains, all for the low price of nothing!

Hiking

If winter sports aren't your thing then hiking is a great way to enjoy Breckenridge. The best part is you can hike during the winter or the summer when it's less busy. No matter where you go, you can find something to challenge yourself in any season.

There are tons of sights to see in the winter including watching people skiing and snowboarding down the mountains, wildlife that seems to be just as active in the off-season and especially the snow. It is an amazing sight when the snow starts falling and you can just enjoy the silence of a fresh snowfall.

If you are there during the spring or summer, waterfalls are everywhere around Breckenridge. There are easy hikes that travel short distances and go minimally uphill and you can also challenge yourself with multiple hour hikes that travel up mountains and around lakes.
