Visiting The Blue Lagoon in Iceland

The Blue Lagoon

When we planned a vacation to Reykjavik, Iceland, we immediately thought of visiting the Blue Lagoon. The light blue water surrounded by black rocks has almost become an Iceland staple.

Whenever Kelsey was on Pinterest she would always see Blue Lagoon pics and it gave her major wanderlust. But don't you guys worry, we now have our own pics and now she gets makes her own Blue Lagoon Pins.

We knew from looking online that the Blue Lagoon was going to be expensive but we also knew it was something we couldn't miss. We were glad we ended up giving it a try as it was one of our favorite parts!

It has so much to offer and is worth the price. The Blue Lagoon is a must-visit for everyone visiting Iceland.

Amenities

The Blue Lagoon

The Lagoon

The biggest draw of the blue lagoon is the lagoon itself. It's a beautiful hot spring with multiple areas to swim around to and great temperature throughout. We went in the winter which made the heat of the water feel even better.

The Blue LagoonThe lagoon is a geothermal hot spring and it has minerals in the water like silica and sulfur that help your skin look and feel better. It is also the largest man-made hot spring in the world so there is a ton of space to explore. That also means you won't feel overly crowded, even if there are a decent amount of people there.

Walk-Up Bar

When you buy your ticket to the blue lagoon, whether it's online or in-person, you get one drink free. The lagoon has a walk-up bar in the lagoon which is great to get that free drink from.

They have alcoholic drinks available as well as fresh fruit smoothies so whatever your preference, you can find something good to drink while you explore the pools.

Steam Rooms and Saunas

Relaxation RoomWe love going to a steam room or sauna so you can understand how excited we were when we found out they had two steam rooms and a sauna here! One of the steam rooms was even in a cave which was an awesome experience. The other steam room and sauna were more typical but still very enjoyable.

They probably had enough space to have ten people in each one so make sure you get in there early before it gets too busy.

Mask Bar

There is a mask bar in the lagoon! This was Kelsey's favorite part of the whole thing. She went back two or three times and loved the feel of the mud. The mud comes with the lagoon's mineral content so it has the same healing properties.

Mask BarThe mud mask bar is the same as the drink bar, you can walk up to it in the water so you don't even have to leave the lagoon to put on the mud. Kelsey perfected the process: grab the mud, put it on your face (or arms, shoulders, really anywhere), walk around, rinse and repeat. There are upgrade masks to buy but the free one is perfect.

Relaxation Room

Right above the lagoon is an area for relaxation, smartly called the relaxation room. It is indoor so it is easily enjoyed in all seasons. There are about ten lounge chairs in there so again, if you want to enjoy it make sure you get it early.

It's a great place to take a little nap before you head back into the lagoon. We also made sure to take a break from the heat of the springs and re-hydrate.

Quick Tips

The blue Lagoon

Get There Early

This place is amazing so a lot of people want to go. To get the best experience you need to get there early. This way the lines are less, the locker rooms have fewer people and most importantly, the lagoon has fewer people. We loved how empty it was and we were able to get better pictures.

Do Not Get Your Hair Wet

Trust us, whatever you do...do not get your hair wet in the lagoon water unless you have VERY short hair. The minerals in the water turn your hair into a straw-like bird nest instantly. It is not worth it. If you want a picture with wet hair, water up in the shower and take a photo that way.

Even if you don't get your hair wet, you should still prepare by putting A LOT of the free conditioner from the locker room in your hair.

The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is probably one of the few touristy spots that we not only went to but would go to again. We had an amazing time. Trust us when we say, it needs to be on your bucket list.
