Simple Ways to Deal with Blogger Burnout
Oh, the dreaded blogger burnout. We've all been there.
Okay maybe not everyone has been there but most bloggers admit falling into a blogging lull at some point or another. Then once you fall into it, getting back out can seem impossible.
It's hard to find the energy when motivation is at an all-time low. So what is one to do?
We have suffered from blogger burnout...more than once and little by little we learned how to pick ourselves back up. It's not always easy, but when you have a passion for blogging you'll keep trying.

Redirect Your Focus
Our attention spans are only capable of so much. Then when you add in burnout it's like we have nothing left to give.
It's crucial to use what little energy you have left on the parts that matter. Try to redirect your focus so your time is spent in a way that's more beneficial.
ROI
We're big fans of using ROI (return on investment) for everything in our lives. Focus on the areas that give your blog the highest ROI, or as we like to say " biggest bang for your buck".
When we have a day where we don't want to do anything we look at our task list and pinpoint what will grow our site the most. After giving ourselves a little pep talk, we spend our energy completing as much as our motivation allows.
Less Draining Tasks
The other idea with redirecting your focus is pinpointing what tasks are just completely draining. Typically it's the busy work that's less enjoyable.
If you only have the energy to do one thing, why not pick something that you like doing...or at least don't hate. And if there's a task that just seems too daunting, save it for another day.
We also try doing mindless tasks when we have little motivation. We all know there are certain blogging tasks that might not be super helpful but are so easy to do it's like "why not".
When we don't want to do anything, we try to at least do something but we keep it simple. This way we save on brainpower and still get something done.
* For our site, we get most of our traffic from Pinterest so creating a few pins is typically at the top of our list. Plus, Kelsey finds it semi-relaxing so it's a win-win. Try to find your equivalent and when the going gets tough, focus on that.
Reward Yourself
We're big fans of the Parks and Rec mindset of "treat yo self", within reason of course. In some form or another, try to reward yourself as an incentive.
Make a deal that once you get a certain task done, you'll spend time doing something else that you enjoy...and is not blogging related. You need time to decompress away from the blogging world.
Phil likes to watch TV and Kelsey likes to drink wine. The activity itself isn't as important but instead the idea is stepping away from "work" and doing something that makes you feel rejuvenated.
Take Time Off
This is probably the last thing a blogger wants to consider but when it comes to burnout, it might be severe enough that you need to take time off. And when we say time off, we mean at least a day or more.
It's hard for any blogger to step away from their site completely. There is a fear that all your hard work and momentum will be lost.
But taking the time to remove yourself might end up being less of a hurt than trying to push through. Plus, there are so many automatic publishing tools available you could plan ahead to give you a stress-free mental vacation.
Be Honest
The first step in any process is always acceptance. The process for blogger burnout acceptance is acknowledging that you are struggling and have no blogging motivation left.
To move forward and address the problem you need to be honest with yourself.
You can love blogging but still have moments where you hate it. That's life and it doesn't take away from you as a blogger.
Updating Followers
You should also be upfront with your followers. Let them know there might be a week without new content and if your honest, they should understand.
If they don't understand you're not missing out if you lose them as a follower. If they can't handle you at your worst then they don't deserve you at your best.
Pick One Thing
When you don't want to do anything try to at least pick something. Just one thing, preferably blog related.
And if that is the only thing you did that day, that's okay. That one thing is still better than nothing.
There's a slight chance once you get the ball rolling, you'll keep at it in a spur of the moment snowball effect. But again, if not, that's okay, the point is to focus on one thing rather than everything.
Set Time Limits
Blogging is the type of career where there is always more to do. There will always be more tasks than are possible to complete in a day.
You will drive yourself crazy and easily log way too many hours if you go until everything is done. Instead, set time limits for yourself.
The time limit depends on your schedule but shoot for a number that you're proud of but doesn't take up all your free time. When we're not working we try for 6-8 hours a day but on busy days it can be as little as 30 minutes.
We like using a tracking app but you could also set a timer. Or make it even more simple and just use a clock.
Tell yourself, "okay I'm going to do this from 11-12 then I'm done". If you didn't complete the task, there's always tomorrow.
Remember Why You Are Blogging
When motivation is low it might be time to step back and remind yourself why you started blogging in the first place. Try to think back to the younger version of yourself that thought blogging was a great idea.
You should also consider why you keep doing it. Mindsets change and it's possible your getting burnout because your initial reasoning is no longer motivating.
Find any reason for blogging and focus on that. This way when you're feeling like giving up, you'll get a second wind.
